Gyan Vriksha: New TV Channel Launched By Assam Government: Assam State Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today launched a new educational television channel Gyanvriksha to compensate for the academic loss induced by the COVID-19 epidemic.

The educational channel launched under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan of the Government of Assam will include study material from class I to class XII in addition to various co-curricular and skill development activities.

Initially, the channel to be operated through the cable network will be gradually transmitted through DTH operators in a phased manner. For now, the channel will be available only in Assamese and gradually content will be developed in other languages.

The minister advised all students to learn from Biswa Vidya, Assam YouTube channel, which has also been developed as a mobile application.

He said, “In the channel, study material for different classes will be provided according to the academic calendar.”

Mr. Sharma further advised students to learn from the Vishwa Vidya YouTube channel and app during the COVID-19 lockdown soon.

“We are working to develop Assamese, Bangla, and Bodo content for different digital and radio platforms. We have already uploaded different courses in Ministry of Human Resource Development’s DIKSHA app,” Mr. Sarma informed.

According to the minister, more than 350,000 students downloaded the DIKSHA app during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Assam Education Minister Himanta Bishwa Sarma said the government was considering shifting the academic year for schools under the Board of Secondary Education Assam or SEBA to April 1-March 31.

Currently, the academic year for SEBA schools is from January to December

Mr Sarma said the decision would be taken on the basis of the views and suggestions of the people of Assam. SEBA has already launched a portal where people can share their views till May 30.

According to Mr. Sarma, the transferred academic year will be prepared for academic losses due to the shifted COVD-19 lockdown. Schools and colleges in the state are closed until further notice.

“We have asked people to submit their suggestions for starting the school year … it will prepare for the loss of the Kavid-19 lockdown … we will make a decision in the first week of June,” Mr Sarma told a news conference.
