Assam Board to introduce ‘Bihu’ as Elective Subject for HS course from 2020: The students who chose Bihu as their elective subject would have had a 100-mark question paper, which would have both theory and practical segments. The Assam Higher Secondary Education Council, known as AHSEC, is ready to introduce indigenous and popular folk dance Bihu as an alternative subject for the higher secondary curriculum from next year. According to local media announcement, after organizing a workshop with many Bihu experts and academicians by AHSEC, Bihu came to work on the contents of textbooks and to prepare a roadmap for courses and decisions on the course.

AHSEC chairman Dayananda Borgohain told TOI that their prime thrust is to preserve the originality of Bihu that has gone through a momentous change with the passage of time. “Bihu is the only festival that can unite people, irrespective of their religion, caste or creed. It’s a vital characteristic of the vibrant culture revolving around the Bihu festivity. But off late, there has been a lot of concern over distortions in Bihu celebrations and the accusing finger is pointed towards the youth. That’s why we have decided to introduce Bihu in the academic curriculum,” said Borgohain.

“We are looking to include Bihu as an elective vocational subject in higher secondary course. Modalities are being work out. We met today to discuss preparation of textbooks and other aspects,” Dr Borgohain said.
In HS courses, students who have selected Bihu as their Elective subjects will have to appear in the final examinations for a 100 Marks question paper. Paper will include both theory and practical sections. However, separation of marks for both segments has not yet been decided.
